II Kings 20:1

King James Version (1769)

1 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray God as capricious or merciless in decreeing Hezekiah's death without recourse, overlooking the subsequent narrative where faithful prayer extends his life, thus diminishing God's responsiveness to intercession; others wrongly universalize it as a fatalistic prophecy for all illnesses, ignoring contextual factors like Hezekiah's piety and the role of divine healing, or treat 'set thine house in order' as solely material estate planning rather than holistic spiritual preparation.

Truth

This passage conveys the core truth of God's sovereignty over human life and the inevitability of death, prompting King Hezekiah, who is gravely ill, to prepare his household and spiritual affairs through the prophet Isaiah's message, emphasizing the need for immediate repentance, reconciliation, and readiness to meet God at any moment.
