II Kings 21:11

King James Version (1769)

11 Because Manasseh king of Judah hath done these abominations, and hath done wickedly above all that the Amorites did, which were before him, and hath made Judah also to sin with his idols:
Untruth

Misinterpretations often include viewing the verse as a blanket endorsement of conquest violence against pagans by equating Manasseh's sins with the Amorites', overlooking that the Amorites' judgment stemmed from centuries of accumulated wickedness under God's long-suffering; another error is relativizing sin by suggesting some abominations are unforgivable or worse than others without context, ignoring Manasseh's later repentance in 2 Chronicles 33; or applying it superficially to modern cultural critiques without recognizing its focus on covenant betrayal and national idolatry.

Truth

This passage condemns King Manasseh's reign as exceptionally wicked, surpassing even the notorious idolatry of the Amorites whom Israel displaced, because he not only committed abominations himself but led Judah into nationwide sin through pervasive idol worship, illustrating how a leader's spiritual corruption can corrupt an entire nation and provoke God's righteous judgment.
