II Kings 22:13

King James Version (1769)

13 Go ye, enquire of the Lord for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray Josiah's reaction as irrational fear-mongering or superstitious panic over an ancient text rather than convicted repentance from truth revealed; some apply it legalistically, claiming any rediscovery of Scripture automatically triggers wrath without context of covenant unfaithfulness, or misuse it to promote works-based salvation ignoring God's emphasis on heart response, while overlooking that the passage underscores collective ancestral sin's consequences without excusing personal accountability.

Truth

King Josiah, upon discovering the long-forgotten Book of the Law, grasps the profound reality that generations of Judah's leaders and people have ignored God's commands, provoking His fierce wrath, and urgently calls for priestly inquiry to seek mercy, embodying the core truth that willful neglect of Scripture invites divine judgment but humble recognition opens the door to potential restoration and obedience.
