II Kings 23:16

King James Version (1769)

16 And as Josiah turned himself, he spied the sepulchres that were there in the mount, and sent, and took the bones out of the sepulchres, and burned them upon the altar, and polluted it, according to the word of the Lord which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray Josiah's actions as senseless grave desecration or fanatical violence against the dead, overlooking the specific prophetic fulfillment that targeted the idolatrous altar as divine judgment; some view it as promoting religious intolerance or endorsing disrespect for ancestors without recognizing the historical context of purging Baal worship and high places condemned by God, while others mistakenly see it as Josiah's personal vendetta rather than zealous obedience to purify Israel's worship according to Mosaic law.

Truth

This passage illustrates the precise fulfillment of a prophecy from over 300 years earlier, as King Josiah burns bones from nearby tombs on an idolatrous altar to defile it, confirming the reliability and sovereignty of God's word spoken through His prophet, who foretold this exact judgment on the altar at Bethel; it underscores Josiah's obedience in eradicating idolatry and the certainty that divine pronouncements against sin will inevitably come to pass, emphasizing God's faithfulness to His promises of judgment and restoration.
