II Kings 23:19

King James Version (1769)

19 And all the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the Lord to anger, Josiah took away, and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Beth–el.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray Josiah's actions as endorsing modern religious violence or intolerance toward other faiths, overlooking the unique covenantal context where God commanded Israel to purge idolatry from their own land to maintain holiness; another error views it as indiscriminate destruction rather than targeted reform against apostate practices within Yahweh's people, potentially justifying contemporary extremism detached from its biblical purpose of spiritual purification.

Truth

King Josiah's decisive destruction of the idolatrous high places throughout Samaria's cities, mirroring his reforms at Bethel, underscores his fervent zeal to eradicate the pagan worship sites erected by previous kings of Israel that had provoked God's anger, thereby exemplifying obedience to divine commands for covenant renewal and the restoration of exclusive devotion to Yahweh across the divided kingdom.
