II Peter 2:9

King James Version (1769)

9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
Untruth

A common misinterpretation is to assume this promises believers complete exemption from all suffering or temptation in this life, ignoring the biblical reality that trials refine faith and that deliverance may not always be immediate or physical; another error is to twist it into a prosperity gospel claim that God guarantees material prosperity now, overlooking the focus on eschatological judgment and spiritual preservation amid adversity.

Truth

This verse underscores God's sovereign ability to rescue the godly from trials and temptations, as demonstrated in the preceding examples of Noah and Lot, while preserving the unjust for punishment on the day of judgment, affirming His perfect justice, faithfulness to the righteous, and ultimate accountability for the wicked.
