II Samuel 4:10

King James Version (1769)

10 When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings:
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray David as hypocritical, implying he secretly orchestrated Saul's death and killed the messenger to eliminate a witness, ignoring his consistent mourning for Saul and prior refusal to harm him. Others erroneously see the passage as endorsing violence against bearers of unfavorable news, overlooking that the punishment targeted the false claim of regicide against God's anointed, not mere tidings, which distorts David's commitment to divine sovereignty.

Truth

David recounts executing an Amalekite who falsely claimed to have killed Saul, hoping for a reward as bearer of good tidings, to demonstrate his profound respect for the Lord's anointed king. This reveals the core truth that David neither rejoiced in Saul's death nor rewarded those involved in it, upholding divine authority and rejecting any human presumption to harm God's chosen leader, thereby affirming his integrity and loyalty even toward his enemy.
