III John 1:12

King James Version (1769)

12 Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation is to treat this as a universal rule requiring unanimous human approval for anyone's credibility, ignoring biblical calls for discernment and the reality that even godly figures like Jesus faced rejection; others might overlook the specific context of Demetrius as a trusted messenger, applying it legalistically to demand multiple endorsements for all decisions, or personify 'truth itself' without recognizing it as Demetrius's conformity to God's truth rather than an independent entity.

Truth

In this verse, the elder (likely John) strongly commends Demetrius for his exemplary character, highlighting his universally positive reputation among people, his alignment with divine truth itself, and the corroborating testimony of reliable witnesses including the elder, underscoring the value of verifiable integrity and faithfulness in Christian fellowship as a basis for trust and support within the church.
