Isaiah 30:10

King James Version (1769)

10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:
Untruth

Misinterpretations often reduce the verse to a mere historical anecdote about ancient prophets without recognizing its broader warning against contemporary cultures or individuals who seek 'feel-good' teachings that affirm sin rather than convict it, such as prosperity gospels or relativistic theologies. Another error portrays the 'right things' as license for abrasive condemnation without love or context, ignoring that true prophecy aligns with God's holistic character of justice and mercy; or it is misused to label any challenging truth as unwanted prophecy, thereby dodging accountability under the guise of victimhood.

Truth

Isaiah 30:10 exposes the rebellious heart of Judah's people who rejected true prophets, demanding instead flattering lies and 'smooth things' to avoid the discomfort of God's righteous judgments and calls to repentance. This core truth underscores a timeless human propensity to prioritize self-deception over divine reality, highlighting the peril of silencing authentic spiritual guidance in favor of comforting falsehoods that lead to ruin.
