Isaiah 57:6

King James Version (1769)

6 Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: even to them hast thou poured a drink offering, thou hast offered a meat offering. Should I receive comfort in these?
Untruth

Common misinterpretations treat the passage as merely a literal critique of ancient pagan stone worship without grasping its metaphorical portrayal of any misplaced trust in creation over the Creator, such as modern materialism or false securities. Others erroneously see it as God capriciously rejecting all rituals, ignoring the biblical emphasis on heart attitude in worship, or apply it legalistically to condemn cultural practices without discerning the context of covenant unfaithfulness and the surrounding offer of mercy to the repentant.

Truth

Isaiah 57:6 condemns Israel's idolatry, where people selected smooth river stones as their portion and lot, pouring out drink offerings and presenting grain offerings to them, practices God utterly rejects as sources of no comfort. The core truth underscores the spiritual adultery of forsaking the living God for lifeless, powerless idols, highlighting the futility of such worship and God's intolerance for divided loyalties, calling believers to exclusive devotion to Him alone.
