Isaiah 58:3

King James Version (1769)

3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation of this verse is to dismiss fasting altogether as ineffective or displeasing to God, ignoring that the critique targets insincere, self-righteous fasting rather than the practice itself; another error is assuming that ritualistic fasting alone earns divine attention and blessings, overlooking the necessity for transformed hearts that produce ethical living and compassion, leading believers to prioritize outward shows over inner integrity.

Truth

Isaiah 58:3 captures God's rebuke to Israel for their hypocritical fasting, where they complain that He overlooks their self-afflicted rituals while they themselves pursue pleasures and exploit laborers on fast days, revealing the core truth that genuine devotion to God demands holistic righteousness—external religious practices like fasting are meaningless without accompanying justice, mercy, and freedom from oppression toward others.
