Isaiah 9:17

King James Version (1769)

17 Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray God as capriciously cruel by denying mercy to vulnerable groups like orphans and widows without cause, overlooking the text's assertion that everyone participates in hypocrisy and evil. Another error applies this solely as a blanket condemnation of youth or the defenseless today, ignoring its specific context of Israel's covenant rebellion. Some view it as irreversible doom, missing the prophetic pattern where God's outstretched hand signals potential for restoration through turning back to Him.

Truth

Isaiah 9:17 conveys God's utter rejection of joy or mercy toward any in a thoroughly corrupt society, encompassing even the young, orphans, and widows, because universal hypocrisy, evildoing, and foolish speech have prevailed. This highlights the comprehensive nature of sin's impact on a nation under judgment, with God's anger unabated and His hand extended in continued discipline, emphasizing the need for genuine repentance amid divine justice.
