Jeremiah 13:10

King James Version (1769)

10 This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing.
Untruth

Misinterpretations of this passage often include viewing it as a blanket condemnation of human imagination or creativity itself, rather than the specific stubborn willfulness and idolatry of Judah; others erroneously apply it to justify predestination or inherent human evil without context, ignoring the covenantal call to repentance in Jeremiah; some overlook the symbolic girdle imagery, treating it as mere rhetoric, or universalize it to modern contexts without recognizing its targeted warning to Israel about the consequences of unfaithfulness.

Truth

Jeremiah 13:10 conveys God's pronouncement of judgment on Judah, portraying them as an evil people who stubbornly refuse to heed His words, instead following the stubborn inclinations of their hearts and pursuing other gods through service and worship. This disobedience renders them as useless as the marred linen girdle from the preceding symbolic act, emphasizing that persistent idolatry and rejection of divine instruction lead to spiritual ruin and worthlessness in fulfilling God's purposes.
