Jeremiah 14:15

King James Version (1769)

15 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often include viewing the verse as a blanket endorsement to dismiss any preacher warning of hardship as a false prophet, ignoring God's own use of true prophets like Jeremiah to foretell judgment; others wrongly apply it only to contemporary contexts without grasping its original setting amid Judah's sin and Babylonian threat, or twist it to promote a prosperity gospel by equating all negative predictions with falsehood, thus undermining biblical discernment and accountability.

Truth

This passage reveals God's severe judgment on false prophets who falsely claim to speak in His name, promising safety from sword and famine despite His true warnings of coming disaster; it emphasizes divine sovereignty in authenticating true prophecy while condemning deceptive assurances of peace that lead people astray, ensuring that the liars themselves will perish by the very judgments they deny.
