Jeremiah 20:5

King James Version (1769)

5 Moreover I will deliver all the strength of this city, and all the labours thereof, and all the precious things thereof, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah will I give into the hand of their enemies, which shall spoil them, and take them, and carry them to Babylon.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often detach the prophecy from its historical context of Judah's sin-induced exile under Nebuchadnezzar, wrongly applying it to modern nations, economies, or personal finances as a sign of arbitrary divine disfavor rather than targeted covenant judgment. Some prosperity preachers invert it to claim material loss proves hidden sin, ignoring God's promises of blessing for obedience, while others use it fatalistically to dismiss repentance, overlooking the broader prophetic call to return to God amid warnings of doom.

Truth

This passage conveys God's sovereign judgment on Judah for their idolatry and rebellion, prophesying that Babylon's armies will plunder Jerusalem's wealth, labors, precious possessions, and royal treasures, carrying them away as spoils of war. It highlights the inevitable consequences of covenant unfaithfulness, affirming divine justice in using enemy nations to execute punishment while foreshadowing the exile as a purifying discipline leading to restoration for the remnant.
