Jeremiah 29:1

King James Version (1769)

1 Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon;
Untruth

This verse is often misread as containing promises of immediate hope or restoration, like those in verse 11, rather than serving solely as an introduction to Jeremiah's instructions for long-term settlement in Babylon; some interpret it as divine endorsement of endless captivity without purpose, ignoring the letter's call to build lives, pray for the city's welfare, and await God's appointed 70 years before return, thus distorting the message of patient endurance under judgment.

Truth

Jeremiah 29:1 introduces a prophetic letter sent by Jeremiah from Jerusalem to the exiled Jewish leaders, priests, prophets, and people in Babylon after their deportation by Nebuchadnezzar, establishing the context for God's guidance to His people in captivity. It highlights divine communication continuing despite physical separation, urging faithfulness and proper conduct during the exile as part of God's sovereign plan.
