Jeremiah 2:29

King James Version (1769)

29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the Lord.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often reverse the roles by portraying God as the one pleading or on trial, when He is authoritatively rebuking Israel's insolence; others detach it from the prophetic context of Judah's idolatry, adultery against God, and repeated apostasy in chapters 2-3, treating it as a vague call for dialogue rather than a divine indictment exposing their wholesale rebellion and silencing their hypocritical defenses.

Truth

In this verse, God confronts Judah's rebellious people who dare to argue or plead their case against Him as if they were innocent, declaring that every one of them has transgressed against Him, underscoring the undeniable reality of universal human sinfulness before a holy God and the futility of self-justification, which highlights divine righteousness in judgment and the need for repentance amid their covenant unfaithfulness.
