Jeremiah 44:15

King James Version (1769)

15 Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,
Untruth

A common misinterpretation is to see the people's unified response as a heroic stand for religious liberty or cultural tradition, rather than the Bible's portrayal of it as brazen defiance against God's authoritative word through His prophet, ignoring the broader context of divine commands to forsake idolatry and the severe judgments already inflicted for such sins. Another error involves blaming only the women for the idolatry while overlooking the men's complicity and the collective accountability emphasized, or detaching the verse from Jeremiah's overall message condemning the exiles' decision to flee to Egypt against God's directive.

Truth

This passage reveals the depth of Israel's rebellion against God, as the Jewish exiles in Egypt—a large group including men who knew of their wives' idolatry and the women themselves—openly and collectively reject Jeremiah's prophetic warning to abandon false gods. It underscores their hardened hearts, unrepentant attitude, and deliberate choice to persist in burning incense to other deities despite God's prior judgments on Judah, illustrating the consequences of persistent disobedience and the futility of excusing sin through communal defiance.
