Jeremiah 44:26

King James Version (1769)

26 Therefore hear ye the word of the Lord, all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt; Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the Lord, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Lord God liveth.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray this as God universally withdrawing His name from all people or revoking His eternal covenant promises, ignoring the specific context of judgment on the idolatrous Judahites in Egypt; others mistakenly see it as divine permission for them to abandon God's name or a temporary silence rather than a permanent curse tied to their unrepentant sin, or apply it anachronistically to modern contexts without recognizing its historical fulfillment in the destruction of that community.

Truth

In this passage, God addresses the Judahites who fled to Egypt against His command, solemnly swearing by His great name that it will no longer be invoked or sworn by among them there, underscoring His irrevocable judgment on their persistent idolatry and rebellion; this declaration severs their covenant relationship in that land, ensuring no genuine worship or acknowledgment of Him persists among this disobedient remnant, highlighting the severe consequences of rejecting divine warnings and choosing exile over obedience.
