Jeremiah 46:11

King James Version (1769)

11 Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt not be cured.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often treat the verse as literal medical counsel, claiming Gilead's balm is universally ineffective and discouraging herbal or natural healing, detached from its prophetic context. Others apply it personalistically to individual sicknesses, overlooking its address to Egypt as a nation facing Babylonian conquest for idolatry and arrogance, or allegorize it to modern geopolitical events without historical grounding, thus diluting the truth of inevitable divine judgment unhealable by human means.

Truth

This passage declares the futility of Egypt's attempts to heal itself from God's impending judgment, portrayed as an incurable wound despite seeking renowned balms from Gilead and using many medicines. It emphasizes that no human effort—military, economic, or remedial—can avert divine retribution for sin and rebellion against God, highlighting the sovereignty of God's justice over proud nations and the need for true repentance rather than superficial remedies.
