Jeremiah 49:16

King James Version (1769)

16 Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the Lord.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often detach the prophecy from its historical context against Edom's specific pride in their mountainous fortresses, leading some to apply it generically as a warning against all high-altitude living or literal bird nests, or to misuse it for modern geopolitical conflicts unrelated to biblical judgment; others spiritualize it overly narrowly as solely about personal pride without recognizing the national scope and God's role as sovereign judge, or ignore the poetic imagery of eagles to claim it predicts ecological disasters, thus diluting its message of inevitable downfall for the unrepentant proud.

Truth

This passage delivers God's judgment against Edom, emphasizing that their pride and false security derived from dwelling in inaccessible rocky heights will not save them, as the Lord declares He will bring them down like an eagle from its nest; the core truth underscores God's sovereignty over human arrogance and presumed invulnerability, reminding all that no natural or strategic advantage can thwart divine justice or protect against the consequences of sin and hubris.
