Jeremiah 50:28

King James Version (1769)

28 The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, the vengeance of his temple.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often detach the verse from its historical context of Babylon's 539 BC conquest by Persia, instead allegorizing Babylon as a future end-times power like Rome, America, or a revived empire, or applying it spiritually to personal victories over sin without regard for the specific geopolitical judgment; others overlook the temple's centrality, viewing it merely as generic revenge rather than retribution for sacrilege against God's dwelling place, or assume it promises immediate escape for all believers in trials regardless of collective covenant obedience.

Truth

This passage prophesies the downfall of Babylon, foretelling that fugitives escaping its destruction will proclaim in Zion God's vengeance against the empire for devastating His temple and His people, underscoring divine justice, the fulfillment of prophetic judgment announced earlier in Jeremiah, and the restoration of hope for Israel as God upholds His covenant faithfulness by punishing their oppressors.
