Jeremiah 7:31

King James Version (1769)

31 And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation is to wrongly assume God endorsed or previously authorized child sacrifice because the Israelites performed it, overlooking the verse's emphatic denial and God's consistent prohibitions in the Law against such practices; another error twists 'neither came it into my mind' to question divine foreknowledge, when it idiomatically stresses that such evil was completely alien to God's holy character and will.

Truth

This passage condemns the idolatrous practice of the people of Judah burning their children alive as sacrifices to pagan gods at the high places of Tophet in the Valley of Hinnom, emphasizing that God never commanded such a horrific abomination nor did it ever enter His mind, highlighting His utter rejection of human sacrifice and call for genuine repentance over corrupted worship.
