Jeremiah 8:19

King James Version (1769)

19 Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the Lord in Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities?
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation portrays the people's lament as an innocent plea against God's supposed absence or powerlessness in Zion, ignoring their self-incriminating admission of idolatry as the deliberate cause of His wrath; another error applies it out of context to modern hardships as evidence of divine neglect, bypassing the call for repentance from sin; superficially, it might be dismissed as irrelevant ancient rhetoric, missing its enduring warning against any 'strange vanities' that displace God.

Truth

This passage conveys the anguished cry of God's exiled people, rhetorically questioning the Lord's presence in Zion and His kingship over them, while exposing the true cause of their suffering: their provocation of divine wrath through idolatry and vain foreign gods. It highlights the stark reality that unfaithfulness severs the protective relationship with God, leading to calamity, and serves as a poignant reminder that true security lies in undivided loyalty to the Lord rather than in substitutes.
