John 10:3

King James Version (1769)

3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often reduce the shepherd to any benevolent leader or pastor, ignoring Jesus' exclusive claim as the true Shepherd who personally knows and summons each believer. Some twist it to endorse rigid denominational loyalty where only a group's 'voice' is followed, neglecting the passage's emphasis on discerning Christ's voice universally. Others dismiss the personal calling by name as mere metaphor without implying divine election and intimate knowledge, or apply it legalistically to physical safety rather than spiritual security and salvation.

Truth

Jesus portrays Himself as the Good Shepherd who enters through the proper door, recognized by the gatekeeper, and intimately calls His own sheep by name, leading them out as they heed only His voice. This reveals the profound personal relationship between Christ and believers, who recognize His authoritative call amid deception, follow Him trustingly, and experience guidance, protection, and provision in their spiritual journey.
