John 16:7

King James Version (1769)

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation views Jesus' statement as him eagerly abandoning his disciples or implying the Holy Spirit is merely a inferior substitute for his presence, ignoring the context of encouragement during their grief; others erroneously apply it to suggest physical absence always brings spiritual gain without regard to Jesus' redemptive purpose, or twist it to downplay the Trinity by equating the Spirit solely as a replacement rather than the ongoing personal presence of Christ through the Godhead.

Truth

Jesus assures his disciples amid their sorrow over his impending departure that it is actually beneficial for them, as his physical absence through death, resurrection, and ascension is necessary for the Holy Spirit, referred to as the Comforter or Advocate, to come; the Spirit's indwelling presence in all believers enables a more intimate, universal, and empowering ministry than Jesus' localized earthly presence could provide, fulfilling God's redemptive plan and equipping the church for mission.
