John 18:37

King James Version (1769)

37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation views Jesus' declaration as endorsing a political or militaristic kingship aimed at overthrowing Roman rule, leading some to expect an earthly revolution that failed to materialize, thus questioning His messiahship; others twist it to justify personal agendas by claiming authority over 'truth' in modern politics or ideologies, ignoring the passage's emphasis on Jesus' spiritual mission to testify to God's eternal truth, which transcends temporal power and calls for inner allegiance rather than external force.

Truth

In this passage, Jesus reveals the essence of His kingship during His trial before Pilate, affirming that He was born and came into the world specifically to bear witness to the truth, positioning truth as the central realm of His royal authority rather than earthly power or conquest. Those who belong to the truth—those aligned with God's reality and righteousness—naturally recognize and heed His voice, highlighting a spiritual kingship that divides humanity based on responsiveness to divine truth over mere political dominion.
