John 5:20

King James Version (1769)

20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation reduces this to Jesus being merely a subordinate learner or puppet of the Father, undermining His divinity, whereas the Father's love and full revelation underscore their equality and oneness in purpose. Another error limits the 'greater works' to physical miracles like healings, overlooking their progression to the cross and resurrection, which offer eternal life and truly provoke eternal wonder, as Jesus clarifies in the following verses.

Truth

This passage highlights the intimate, loving relationship between God the Father and Jesus the Son, where the Father reveals all His works to the Son and will display even greater miracles through Him, exceeding the recent healing at Bethesda, so that people will marvel at divine power. It affirms Jesus' divine authority and unity with the Father, demonstrating that Jesus acts in perfect harmony with God's will and possesses full knowledge of divine actions, pointing to His role in manifesting God's glory through escalating signs of redemption.
