John 5:37

King James Version (1769)

37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation is to read the verse as a blanket denial that God ever spoke audibly or appeared visibly in the Old Testament, such as at Sinai or in the burning bush, whereas Jesus specifically addresses the spiritual incapacity of His contemporaries to recognize divine revelation; another error is to use it to deny the Trinity or Jesus' divinity by claiming the Father is utterly invisible and unknowable, ignoring Jesus' role as the exact representation of the Father; or to twist it into support for deism, suggesting God no longer interacts directly with humanity after Jesus.

Truth

Jesus declares that God the Father Himself has borne witness to His identity and mission through various means like the Scriptures, John the Baptist, miracles, and His works, yet the Jewish leaders remain spiritually deaf and blind, having never truly heard God's voice or seen His form because they reject the incarnate Word. This verse emphasizes the divine authentication of Jesus' authority and exposes the hypocrisy of those who claim to follow Moses while ignoring the very testimony he provided about the Messiah.
