John 6:14

King James Version (1769)

14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation is viewing the crowd's declaration as full endorsement of Jesus as the Messiah or divine Son of God, whereas they anticipated a political deliverer like Moses to overthrow Roman rule, leading them soon after to attempt forcing Jesus into kingship by worldly means (John 6:15); this overlooks the superficial nature of their faith, rooted in physical miracles rather than spiritual commitment, and confuses the specific 'prophet like Moses' with a mere miracle-worker or revolutionary leader.

Truth

John 6:14 captures the crowd's recognition of Jesus as 'that prophet' foretold in Deuteronomy 18:15-18, the one like Moses who would perform miraculous signs and deliver God's words directly; after witnessing the feeding of the five thousand, they affirm this truth, highlighting Jesus' fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy through his divine authority and provision, pointing to his messianic identity without yet grasping the spiritual depth of his mission.
