John 6:62

King James Version (1769)

62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
Untruth

Misinterpretations often detach this verse from the Bread of Life discourse, viewing it as a standalone prediction of the Ascension event in Acts without grasping its purpose in bolstering Jesus' claim to be the sustaining spiritual bread from heaven. Some erroneously interpret the ascension as negating any literal sense of eating his flesh, using it to argue against eucharistic real presence, while others downplay the pre-existence phrase 'where he was before' as mere poetry rather than a declaration of eternal divinity. Additionally, it can be misconstrued as Jesus doubting his followers' commitment or his own mission, ignoring its role as a faith-testing provocation that points to his vindication through exaltation.

Truth

Jesus poses a rhetorical challenge to his disciples who are stumbling over his teaching that they must eat his flesh and drink his blood to have eternal life, asking what they would think if they saw the Son of Man ascending to where he was before, thereby affirming his pre-existence with the Father, his divine origin, and his impending glorification through the ascension. This underscores the necessity of faith that transcends earthly reasoning, as his supernatural exaltation will validate his identity and the truth of his words, urging believers to persevere amid difficult doctrines.
