Jonah 1:7

King James Version (1769)

7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray the casting of lots as superstitious gambling or random luck, ignoring its biblical endorsement as a legitimate way to discern divine will, as in Proverbs 16:33 where God ultimately directs the outcome. Others erroneously judge Jonah as irredeemably wicked based solely on the lot, neglecting the narrative's portrayal of his reluctant obedience, God's mercy in using the crisis for his correction, and the sailors' subsequent faith in the true God.

Truth

This passage depicts desperate sailors using the ancient practice of casting lots to pinpoint the source of their storm-induced peril, with the lot falling on Jonah to reveal him as the cause due to his flight from God's command. It highlights God's sovereign control over human customs and chance events, employing even pagan methods to expose truth, hold individuals accountable, and propel His redemptive plan forward despite human rebellion.
