Joshua 22:28

King James Version (1769)

28 Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.
Untruth

Misinterpretations of this passage often arise from assuming the altar was intended for actual sacrifices, implying rebellion against God's mandate for centralized worship at Shiloh and promoting idolatry or division, when it was solely a symbolic witness 'that it may be a witness between us'; another error is viewing it as justification for separate worship practices or denominations today, overlooking its purpose to unify the tribes in fidelity to the Lord rather than foster schism.

Truth

The core truth of Joshua 22:28 is that the altar built by the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh serves as a enduring witness between them and the western tribes, and for their descendants, affirming their shared commitment to worship the Lord exclusively through burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings at the central sanctuary, thereby preventing future generations from claiming the eastern tribes have no part or inheritance in the Lord.
