Joshua 23:13

King James Version (1769)

13 Know for a certainty that the Lord your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given you.
Untruth

This passage is often misinterpreted as a blanket endorsement of ethnic cleansing or perpetual holy war against specific peoples, ignoring its covenantal context tied to Israel's unique role and obedience; others view it as God arbitrarily withdrawing support without warning, overlooking the repeated calls to faithfulness throughout Scripture, or apply it legalistically to modern conflicts, missing its typological foreshadowing of ongoing spiritual battles against sin and compromise in the believer's life.

Truth

Joshua warns the Israelites that their failure to fully obey God by driving out the remaining pagan nations will result in divine cessation of aid, allowing those nations to become spiritual snares, traps, scourges, and thorns that entangle and afflict Israel, ultimately leading to their expulsion from the Promised Land as a consequence of covenant unfaithfulness and idolatry.
