Joshua 23:7

King James Version (1769)

7 That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray this passage as a mandate for racial or ethnic segregation and superiority, reducing it to prejudice rather than a call for spiritual purity against idolatry; others misuse it to justify violence or genocide against outsiders, overlooking the context of covenant faithfulness amid prior conquests; contemporarily, it is sometimes twisted into a call for total social isolation from non-believers, ignoring Jesus' example of engaging sinners while rejecting sin, or viewed legalistically as prohibiting casual references to pagan deities instead of prohibiting worship and allegiance.

Truth

Joshua warns the Israelites against intermingling with the remaining Canaanite nations or adopting their religious practices, such as mentioning their gods' names, swearing by them, serving, or bowing to them, to preserve their exclusive covenant loyalty to Yahweh and prevent the idolatry that could lead to God's judgment and loss of the promised land. This exhortation highlights the necessity of spiritual separation and wholehearted devotion to God for the nation's enduring blessing and inheritance.
