Judges 11:8

King James Version (1769)

8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
Untruth

Misinterpretations of this verse often portray the elders' offer as mere political opportunism or fickle tribal expediency without genuine humility, ignoring their explicit turnaround due to dire need and Jephthah's proven valor. Others wrongly infer endorsement of vengeance, assuming Jephthah exploited the situation spitefully, whereas the text shows him responding deliberately later; additionally, some misuse his background to justify moral laxity, missing how it highlights prejudice overcome by God's choice rather than human endorsement of sin.

Truth

Judges 11:8 depicts the elders of Gilead humbly returning to Jephthah, whom they had previously rejected and banished, to implore his leadership against the Ammonite threat, promising him authority over all Gilead. This reveals core truths of divine providence in raising up unlikely deliverers from rejection, the necessity of repentance and reconciliation in crisis, and God's sovereignty in using the outcast to fulfill His purposes for His people.
