Judges 2:1

King James Version (1769)

1 And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation is to isolate this verse as a blanket promise of God's unconditional favor and protection for Israel regardless of their actions, ignoring the immediate context where the angel rebukes them for making covenants with the land's inhabitants and not destroying their altars, thus failing to uphold their covenant obligations; another error views the angel solely as a created messenger without recognizing the divine authority speaking through it, or applies it ahistorically to modern believers as a guarantee of material prosperity without repentance.

Truth

This passage conveys the core truth of God's unwavering faithfulness to His covenant with Israel, as the angel of the Lord reminds them that He delivered them from Egypt, brought them to the promised land sworn to their ancestors, and solemnly declares He will never break that covenant; it underscores divine reliability amid human failure, setting the stage in Judges for confronting Israel's disobedience while affirming God's promises rooted in His character.
