Judges 2:17

King James Version (1769)

17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but they did not so.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation is to read this as an eternal curse on future generations or a justification for blanket condemnation of modern idolatry without context, ignoring God's merciful cycle of raising judges for deliverance and the opportunity for repentance; another error treats the 'whoring after other gods' literally as mere sexual immorality rather than a metaphor for covenant-breaking idolatry and disobedience, or applies it selectively to vilify others while excusing personal failings.

Truth

This passage captures the core truth of Israel's recurring unfaithfulness during the Judges period, where despite God raising judges to deliver and guide them, the people quickly rejected godly leadership, pursued idolatry as spiritual infidelity, and abandoned the obedient path of their ancestors who heeded the Lord's commandments, illustrating humanity's innate tendency toward rebellion and the fragility of covenant loyalty without steadfast devotion to God.
