Luke 11:29

King James Version (1769)

29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
Untruth

Misinterpretations include viewing the passage as Jesus rejecting all miracles outright, ignoring his many performed signs, or assuming it prohibits seeking any divine confirmation today without recognizing the unique sign of Jonah already fulfilled in the resurrection; others dismiss it as mere judgment without noting its evangelistic call to faith based on that pivotal event, or apply it legalistically to forbid personal experiences of God's power altogether.

Truth

Jesus rebukes a faithless crowd demanding spectacular proof of his divine authority despite his teachings and miracles, labeling their generation evil for unbelief; he promises no sign except that of Jonah, foreshadowing his own death, three days in the tomb, and resurrection, which stands as the ultimate confirmation of his messiahship and calls for repentance.
