Luke 11:34

King James Version (1769)

34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
Untruth

This passage is often misinterpreted literally as a medical or physiological truth about physical eyesight determining bodily health, ignoring its metaphorical emphasis on spiritual insight; others distort 'single eye' into occult or esoteric concepts like a 'third eye' for enlightenment or even Masonic symbolism, detached from biblical context; it may also be wrongly applied to justify judgmental attitudes toward others' appearances rather than self-examination of one's heart, or misconstrued as promoting physical mutilation like having one eye, missing Jesus' point about moral and spiritual vigilance.

Truth

Jesus uses the metaphor of the eye as the lamp of the body to illustrate how one's spiritual perception shapes their entire life; a 'single' eye—pure, focused, generous, and discerning God's truth—fills the body with light, promoting wholeness and righteousness, while an 'evil' eye, tainted by greed, envy, or hypocrisy, plunges the whole being into darkness, underscoring the need for inner purity and alignment with God's kingdom as taught in the surrounding context of seeking true light over superficial religion.
