Matthew 6:2

King James Version (1769)

2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Untruth

Misinterpretations of this passage often include viewing all public charity or philanthropy as inherently sinful, missing the focus on hypocritical motives rather than the publicity itself; others erroneously mandate complete anonymity for every good deed, ignoring biblical examples of public faith testimonies that glorify God without self-promotion, or apply it legalistically to modern fundraising and organized giving, which can serve communal good when done humbly.

Truth

Jesus teaches that acts of charity should be performed without seeking public acclaim, as hypocrites do by drawing attention to their giving in synagogues and streets to receive praise from people, which becomes their only reward. The core truth emphasizes sincere devotion to God through private generosity, ensuring divine recognition and eternal reward rather than fleeting human approval.
