Matthew 9:17

King James Version (1769)

17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often treat the passage literally as winemaking advice, overlooking its symbolic nature, or misuse it to advocate discarding all traditions indiscriminately, ignoring Jesus' continuity with and fulfillment of the old covenant; others apply it superficially to everyday changes like habits or innovations without recognizing the deeper call for spiritual renewal in response to the gospel's transformative vitality.

Truth

Jesus employs the metaphor of new wine and old wineskins to convey that his revolutionary message and the new covenant cannot be contained within the rigid, outdated structures of traditional Judaism, much like fermenting new wine would burst brittle old wineskins, destroying both; instead, a fresh, adaptable 'wineskin'—a transformed heart and renewed approach—is required to fully receive and preserve the life-giving power of his kingdom.
