Numbers 31:50

King James Version (1769)

50 We have therefore brought an oblation for the Lord, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the Lord.
Untruth

Common misinterpretations include viewing the offering as a mercenary bribe to buy God's favor or forgiveness, which distorts the voluntary, grateful response to divine protection into a works-based transaction alien to biblical grace; others erroneously frame it as endorsement of greedy plunder or indiscriminate violence, ignoring the unique context of God's commanded holy war against Midian for their grievous sins against Israel, or dismiss it as superstitious ritual without appreciating its role as sincere worship and consecration of battle gains to the Lord.

Truth

The core truth conveyed is the profound gratitude of the Israelite army captains for God's supernatural protection, as not a single soldier perished in the battle against Midian despite their vulnerability; in humble recognition of divine mercy and preservation, they voluntarily present gold articles from the spoils as a thank offering and atonement before the Lord, demonstrating heartfelt devotion and acknowledgment of His sovereignty over life and victory.
