Numbers 4:15

King James Version (1769)

15 And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.
Untruth

Common misinterpretations of this verse strip it from its context within the Levitical priesthood's tabernacle duties under the Old Covenant, wrongly applying it to modern scenarios like prohibiting lay Christians from handling Bibles, crosses, or church artifacts, thereby fostering an unbiblical clerical elitism contrary to the New Testament's priesthood of all believers. Others might view it as endorsing a fear-based religion where curiosity about God leads to instant death, ignoring Christ's fulfillment of these shadows through His atoning work that grants bold access to the holy place; or twist it to justify rigid legalism in worship, overlooking the grace that replaces such perilous rituals with spiritual worship in spirit and truth.

Truth

Numbers 4:15 outlines the sacred protocol for transporting the tabernacle's holy furnishings, emphasizing God's untouchable holiness and the need for reverence among His servants. After Aaron and his sons cover the sanctuary and its vessels, the Kohathite Levites are permitted to carry them as the camp moves, but they must not touch any holy thing lest they die, highlighting the deadly seriousness of approaching divine purity without proper mediation and preparation, which underscores themes of separation between the holy and profane, obedience to God's precise instructions, and the role of appointed priests in shielding others from lethal consequences.
