Proverbs 23:23

King James Version (1769)

23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation treats the verse literally as endorsing the purchase of truth or wisdom with money, such as buying books, teachings, or even indulgences, ignoring its metaphorical language that emphasizes effort and prioritization over financial transaction; others wrongly infer a call to hoard knowledge selfishly by not selling it, whereas the intent is to never trade away or compromise these virtues for fleeting gains, while failing to recognize the passage's focus on divine, moral truth amid Proverbs' warnings against folly and temptation.

Truth

Proverbs 23:23 exhorts believers to pursue truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding with utmost diligence and to hold them fast without compromise, using the vivid imagery of buying precious commodities that are worth any cost and never selling them for any price; in the context of Proverbs' wisdom literature, truth primarily signifies God's reliable word and righteous principles, which demand personal investment through study, obedience, and sacrifice, yielding eternal value far surpassing material wealth.
