Proverbs 24:12

King James Version (1769)

12 If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation reduces the verse to a simple prohibition against lying about what one knows, ignoring its urgent context of intervening to save the innocent from execution or peril; others erroneously apply it as proof of salvation by works alone, detached from faith and grace, or conversely, as license for passivity by claiming plausible deniability, thus evading the mandate for vigilant wisdom and moral courage in the face of injustice.

Truth

This proverb warns against the futile excuse of ignorance when failing to rescue those unjustly threatened with death or harm, affirming God's omniscience as the one who weighs hearts, guards souls, and judges deeds accordingly; it calls believers to active responsibility and compassion, knowing that divine scrutiny pierces all pretenses and holds each accountable for opportunities to do justice that come within their knowledge.
