Psalms 123:2

King James Version (1769)

2 Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that he have mercy upon us.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation views this verse as endorsing rigid social hierarchies or subservience to human authority figures, overlooking its spiritual metaphor for devotion to God alone; others might see it as promoting passive inaction or fatalism, ignoring the active faith and watchful hope it portrays, or mistakenly limit God's mercy to those who achieve perfect obedience, whereas it highlights grace extended to the dependent and penitent.

Truth

Psalms 123:2 illustrates the posture of humble dependence and eager attentiveness that believers should have toward God, comparing it to servants who fix their eyes on their masters' hands awaiting instruction or provision, and a maiden looking to her mistress; this conveys a collective 'our eyes wait upon the LORD our God' in hopeful expectation of His mercy, emphasizing trust, submission, and patient vigilance amid trials rather than self-reliance.
