Romans 7:7

King James Version (1769)

7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation portrays the law as the cause or instigator of sin, implying it tempts or produces sinful desires like covetousness, whereas Paul clearly states the law merely exposes preexisting sin without originating it. Another error is to misuse the passage to argue that the law is irrelevant or burdensome for believers today, overlooking Paul's affirmation of its spiritual value in revealing humanity's utter dependence on grace rather than self-righteous efforts.

Truth

Paul emphatically defends the goodness of God's law, explaining that it is not sin but rather the divine instrument that reveals and defines sin in the human heart. Without the law's explicit prohibitions, such as against coveting, people remain unaware of their inward lusts and moral failings, underscoring the law's holy role in awakening conscience and pointing to the need for redemption through Christ.
