Zechariah 4:6

King James Version (1769)

6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often include viewing the verse as a call to passivity, implying no human action or effort is needed since the Spirit does everything, which overlooks the active obedience and work required alongside reliance on God; another error is using it to dismiss practical planning, resources, or leadership skills as sinful 'might' or 'power,' ignoring how the Spirit typically empowers and directs human agency rather than bypassing it; it is also wrongly applied to personal failures by claiming lack of results means absence of the Spirit, neglecting factors like disobedience or unfaithfulness.

Truth

This passage conveys the core truth that divine accomplishments, such as Zerubbabel's task of rebuilding the temple amid opposition, are achieved not by human might, power, or self-reliant efforts, but solely by the Spirit of God, emphasizing total dependence on divine empowerment for success and the removal of obstacles like the metaphorical great mountain that will become a plain before God's anointed leader.
