I Chronicles 29:17

King James Version (1769)

17 I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation views this verse as endorsing prosperity theology or manipulative tithing practices, suggesting that generous giving—especially of money—automatically earns divine favor or material blessings, while overlooking the emphasis on God's scrutiny of heart motives over the amount or visibility of the gift. Another error treats David's uprightness as a claim to sinless perfection, rather than sincere integrity amid human frailty, or applies it legalistically to demand outward compliance without genuine inner transformation.

Truth

This passage captures King David's prayer of humility and joy during the temple preparations, affirming that God searches the hearts and delights in uprightness or integrity rather than superficial acts. David testifies to his own willing generosity from a pure motive and celebrates the people's voluntary offerings, highlighting that authentic worship and service to God flow from an inner disposition of devotion and selflessness, pleasing to Him above all else.
